That kind of two axis tracer can be unbolted from the carriage easily and you are back to a normal lathe. It has its own ways and toolblock that slide in Z and X relative to the pattern. So in use, position the carriage where you want to do the tracing, start it up and it will trace the pattern without any further motion of the carriage!
I advanced .001 each cut after aligning with the centre of the hole. The keyway had to be .75" deep. I started out deeper as I could not figure out how to cut a groove at the bottom of the hole with my mill and I did not want to take it out of the vise and chuck it on the lathe.

Not sure what besides the tracer unit would be adaptable from a tracer mill, but lathe type tracers can make a planer; or with more difficulty a shaper, do interesting tricks. But 12 years later, still have not applied my Mimik to it. I do some contour planing, but hard patterns with roller follower has worked for my apps.
