The CR has much more aftermarket add-ons available, and it is easier to find. The KX is butt-ugly IMO. The KX500 has a PWK carburetor (the one thing better than what comes stock on the CR500) The CR500's carburetor still works great, and is easier to tune than the PWK's are.

KX 500 won't start. I own a 1986 KX 500 in good shape. It has plenty of spark, good gas, and more than enough compression, it just won't start. I have checked the electrical components, all good, cleaned carb till it shines, new plug, replaced one stator coil.
